Course Structure & Highlights
Session 1: The Science Of Composting (2 hours)
Anyone can compost—it’s no rocket science. But those who truly excel know the secret ingredient: the science of composting. If you want to compost without worrying about bad odors, excess maggots or excess moisture issues, your journey begins with understanding the fundamental principles.
In this session, you’ll learn about the essential ingredients for composting such as greens and browns, and the critical factors like the carbon:nitrogen (C:N) ratio, aeration, moisture, temperature, pH level, electrical conductivity, excess maggots, pathogens, particle size, porosity, time, harvesting, curing, and humus. Once you grasp these basics, composting becomes a seamless experience.
Plus, you’ll be able to quickly identify and fix any issues that may arise. This science is incredibly intriguing! The deeper you dive, the more enjoyable it becomes!
Session 2: Setting Up for Success (1.5 hours)
Selecting the right composting infrastructure is essential for ongoing composting success in your balcony or backyard. Are you up for some DIY projects to build your own composter, or do you prefer the convenience of market-ready solutions?
By the end of this session, you’ll be equipped with the knowledge to choose a composter that matches your family size and other criteria. Additionally, we’ll discuss the space and budget considerations to keep this process as economical as possible.
In case you already have a composting setup but are encountering problems, we’ll pinpoint the drawbacks in your existing infrastructure and assist you in resolving them effortlessly.
> Composting Kickoff: Get the Ball Rolling
After selecting your composter and starting the composting process after Session 2, it’s time to kick off your journey in case this is your first attempt and set up a system for your home. If you already have a system but want to fine-tune it, this halfway huddle comes to your rescue too.
When we reconvene for Session 3, we’ll review your initial progress, address any questions, and provide guidance to ensure your composting journey is on the right track. Use this time to observe, take notes, and prepare for a deeper dive into the science of composting.
Session 3: It’s All in The Process. Period! (1.5 hours)
In this session, we dive deep into the biological marvel that is composting. We’ll explore the intricate stages of the composting process, starting with the mesophilic stage and then move on to thermophilic stage.
You’ll witness how the compost pile transforms, with larger food particles becoming smaller and darker, and the colour shifting as decomposition progresses. The session will highlight the role of various microbes, from bacteria to fungi, as they come, perform their tasks, and eventually perish, leaving behind rich, dark compost.
This session celebrates the symphony of nature, showcasing how beautifully Mother Nature orchestrates this process. By understanding these biological stages, you’ll gain a deeper appreciation for the natural cycles that turn waste into valuable compost.
> 1 Week Break: Pause and Progress
