What Is The Best Breakfast?

Breakfast has always been a really confusing meal. Between the marketing machinery telling me that cereals give me the ideal start to my day and my mom making aloo paranthas, I’ve never really known what the ideal breakfast should be. I recently came across this video which made me realise my entire childhood chocos and milk obsession was a grand scheme of trickery.

So I set about to do some research on how do you decide what is the ideal breakfast.

Meals with low glycemic index

Basically, the glycemic load determines how much a certain food will cause our blood sugar to rise, and for breakfast, the lower, the better. For foods with high glycemic index, this will cause the blood sugar to rise sharply and will also fall sharply. What you want is a sustained release of energy to the body. Low glycemic index food will release the energy into the body slower and ensure adequate energy levels to get on with your day.

So… what should we eat for breakfast?

The answer is basic healthy eating advice: fruits and vegetables, whole (unprocessed) grains, and healthy proteins and fats. This answer may be unsurprising and you may recall this from advice your mothers or grandmothers gave you.

So here it is then – the ingredients for a healthy breakfast.

  • Fruit: You can’t go wrong with fresh fruit. With a more than healthy dose of vitamins, minerals and fibre, these are an essential addition to the meal.
  • Nuts and/or seeds and/or grains: Another great source of vitamins, packed with proteins and good fats – to be consumed in moderation.
  • Yogurt, Yogurts can be high in protein, calcium, vitamins, and live culture, or probiotics, which can enhance the gut microbiota. These can offer protection for bones and teeth and help prevent digestive problems.

So the ideal breakfast then is a yogurt bowl filled with fruits and nuts. This power-packed bowl gives you just the right nutrition to start the day on a high and checks all the boxes required for the first meal of the day. The good thing about this is you can change the flavour dramatically by changing up the combination of fruits and nuts so that you don’t get bored. Here are some recipes for yogurt bowls.
